All About Ethanol

Did you know that Ethanol is also known as alcohol. Ethanol is a natural byproduct of plant fermentation and also can be produced through the hydration of ethylene. There is ethyl alcohol and grain alcohol which is a clear, colourless liquid that we ind in our alcoholic beverages like wine, beer and brandy. Ethanol is also present in a variety of products we use on a daily basis from personal care and beauty products to paints and varnishes to fuel.

Ethanol is used in our cosmetics and beauty products to help clean skin and when used in lotions as a preservative it helps the lotion ingredients to stick together and avoid separating. In our hairspray, it help's the spray stick to hair. Eethanol is very effective in killing microorganisms like bacteria, fungi and viruses and you are probably aware of it being the primary ingredient in hand sanitisers.

It's been recommended to use these types of sanitisers when water and soap is unavailable.. but the best kind you can use is Biosan's all natural sanitiser to avoid harsh chemicals. Ethanol is also very common in our household products such as cleaning products and paint and can mix easily with water and many organic compounds. A less commonly known fact about ethanol is that it is also found in our food and can help evenly distribute food colouring, as well as enhance the flavour of food extracts. In the US, 97 percent of gasoline contains ethanol. The mixture, called E10, is made up of 10 percent ethanol and 90 percent gasoline. This mix oxygenate's the fuel to help reduce air pollution. Although this is a very common chemical, be careful when handling ethanol. It is highly flammable posing a fire risk and although we can 'drink' ethanol in our alcoholic beverages, consuming ethanol alone can cause coma and death.
