Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) Is In Everything

SLS is extremely common. It is mostly found in shampoos, soaps, body washes, and any products that require a thick foam. It is found in a huge 90% of skincare products making it very hard to avoid. Whilst the ingredient itself isn’t a huge concern, it’s the harmful contaminants created during the manufacturing process that pose a health threat. Worryingly, these contaminants may cause kidney and liver defects.

A lot of people who are aware of these health issues linked with using SLS will opt for safer products with SLS-free formulations. Many use foam-free natural products, decyl glucoside, coco-glucoside, saponified carrier oils or castile soaps which include coconut, olive oil, and sunflower oils.

An alternative to SLS is sodium coco-sulfate which is very similar to SLS. This actually contains SLS and a blend of other coconut-derived sulfates but can cause the same kind of health concerns.
